WINDOW FRAME REPAIRS AND ACTIVITIES OF GROUPS
(Reprinted from SHIRE no 323 December 1998)
I expect many of you have seen the scaffolding recently gone up around Public Hall. This has been put there to help check out and hopefully replace some of the window frames that have, seen better days, some of the guttering and stopping the leaks in the roof. The work is being carried out by contractors on behalf of the City Council. They won't be able to replace all the frames but it should greatly improve the weather proofing of the Hall.
The clock-is still being temperamental after its recent overhaul by Dave Tudor. Dave had hoped it was just a matter of waiting for the new parts he had fitted to bed themselves in. It seems this was not to be and looks like Dave has a bit more work before we hear the chimes again.
Inside the Hall, there seems to be lots going on with lots of local groups using the facilities. Unfortunately we have lost one of our user groups - the Kellaway Players have disbanded, we will miss their popular presentations. To fill the gap Joan Johnson the Hall booking secretary and general factotum is trying to produce a pantomime for early in the New Year. When I last spoke to Joan she had lots of children and young people involved but was looking for more adults - so if you want to have that star on your door or dress up in outrageous costumes now is the chance, why not give Joan a call. Look out for the up and coming events at the Hall. The Victorian Fair is happening on the l2th December. We now have a regular stamp fair every month in the Hall. We are in discussion with Southmead Blood Transfusion who may be using the Hall once a quarter so you won't have to go too far if you want to donate blood.
Thanks to all who braved the rain and wind to come along to the annual craft exhibition which again showed what a wealth of talent there is in the village. It was really good to see crafts from the young people in the local Guides and Brownies.
Behind the scenes the Hall Management Committee is working towards finding ways of improving the condition of the Hall and how best it can be used in the future. If you have any views or comments why not let me know and we can use this column to try them out.
